A scenic shortcut between Virginia Beach and the Northeast, the 20-mile project crosses the Chesapeake Bay where it meets the Atlantic Ocean and is made up of trestles, two one-mile tunnels, four manmade islands, two bridges and roadways. It received the ASCE Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award in 1965.
